Part
I Speaker
Rex A. Carr, PhD., Director Leadership Development, Region
IV Education Service Center spoke on behalf of Part I. Rex, commenting
on the use of metaphors and analogies within Model-Netics, described
Model-Netics in terms of old wine (timeless management concepts)
in new bottles (structured approach to Model-Netics).
In Rex's
words, "Model-Netics is very sound, fundamental concepts, ideas
and theories -- put in a wonderful bottle we can all take with us
and use in our daily lives and in our businesses as managers."
Rex will
personally be involved in the installation of Model-Netics not only
at Region IV, but also at the many member school districts they
serve in the greater Houston area.
Part III Speaker
Susan Roeder (2527), Manager of Acquisition and Divestiture
Accounting, Hilcorp Energy Company, spoke on behalf of Part III.
Susan explained
her thoughts on Model-Netics: "the simple elegance of the whole
program has astounded me. At first I thought it (Model-Netics) to
be simplistic since I had heard many of the concepts before, but
the more I use it, the more powerful it grows. I find myself seeing
new interpretations."
In commenting
on the many aspects of her business, the oil industry, over which
they have little or no control, Susan reflected that, "We have
to use a program such as Model-Netics to control the things we can
control... things like sharing information cost containment, making
sure to identify and retain quality employees who will act with
a business-owner type mentality."
Featured Speaker
Robert Stockwell (2007), Chief Academic Officer, Houston Independent
School District (HISD) was the featured speaker at the graduation
luncheon.
Bob has
been a central figure in the successful installation of many of
the MEMC programs within HISD including Model-Netics. He reflected
on then Superintendent Rod Paige and current U.S. Secretary of
Education's initial introduction to Model-Netics: "Dr. Paige
stepped right up and became the first instructor in HISD and taught
his own direct reports and other top officers in the program. That
was a new thing. They saw him teach and talk about management, and
he fell in love with it."
He went
on to discuss many of the models that helped in shaping Dr. Paige's
thinking including:
- North
Bound Train -- "...helped to focus people and gave them
a sense of direction.";
- Improvement
Diagram
- "Dr. Paige got a lot out of this model, which runs con-
trary to popular wisdom that leadership is everything."
Bob concluded
in commenting that "we wouldn't be where we are as a District
today without Model-Netics and the support of Mr. Hook and Main
Event Management...we think we have already become the best urban
school district in the country with our next goal being to lose
the term "urban" from that phrase."
