When
were you personally introduced to Model-Netics?
Mr. Henry: I first heard of Model-Netics from one of my board
members - Jim Ellis (0026) - when we began discussing the need for
management training in our company. Jim has been a life-long friend
of Harold Hook, and was one of the first certified instructors in
Model-Netics.
How do you personally use Model-Netics?
Mr. Henry: Model-Netics serves as a great guide for thought
and action. I now see models used in all types of communications
within our company. It is such a great language and shorthand to
have at our disposal. I even use the models on my wife once in a
while!
Why did you introduce Model-Netics to the Jack Henry
staff and management?
Mr. Henry: Our company has grown significantly
since 1995, and we found ourselves with a lot of new managers and
people from different management backgrounds. It was vital for us
to all get on the same page so that we were making decisions based
on a single philosophy.
What
have been the benefits of Model-Netics for participants?
Mr. Henry: Most of our managers (including myself)
have never had formal management training. Model-Netics provides
a foundation and structure to apply our own unique experiences.
We’ve all learned a lot from our classroom discussions and
exchanges.
Who
receives Model-Netics training in your organization?
Mr. Henry: We have just completed an aggressive
training program to get all of our managers (over 200 people) through
Model-Netics.
Can
you share a specific incident that demonstrates how Model-Netics
has had a positive impact on your organization?
Mr. Henry: At our annual manager’s meeting,
we outlined the Jack Henry Northbound Train. This is the first time
we shared and discussed the philosophies and values of our company.
It was a big hit, a “meaningful experience” and we will
use this as a guide for all of our existing as well as prospective
employees.
What impact has Model-Netics had within Jack Henry &
Associates, Inc.?
Mr. Henry: It has brought us closer together as a company.
With 2,100 employees and 26 locations, it can be difficult to act
and think like one unit especially if the company has grown through
acquisitions. If you are going to portray the company as united
and successful, you better be able to walk the walk. Model-Netics
has been a big help in that direction.
Any
comments or points that you would like to share about Model-Netics?
Mr. Henry: Early on I was told that Model-Netics
would have more of an impact if I was one of the instructors. I
resisted the idea because I felt I was too busy to get that involved.
I’m glad I changed my mind. Teaching Model-Netics has been
more fun and more rewarding than I ever thought possible.

Selection
Process - Dr. Stroud also noted the crucial role Model-Netics has
played within the selection process. She and the district superintendents
discussed what process would be used when replacing principals.
They agreed that the identification and selection process was essential.
“The minute we started talking about it, you could imagine
the Selection, Evaluation and Compensation grid popping into their
heads and how we were going to draw the ‘picture’ of
the new principals.”
In summarizing
her comments, Margaret explained that Model-Netics is a “philosophy
internalized by the whole organization...a language and a tool that
re-engineers your thinking process. It has certainly helped the
Houston Independent School District and laid the foundation for
it becoming a great school district.”
ITP
Finds a New Home in Houston
For
the past several years, Main Event Management Corporation (MEMC) has
held its quarterly Instructor Training Program (ITP) at the Wyndham
Greenspoint Hotel. Beginning with the September 2002 session, ITP’s
will be held at the University of Houston Hilton. The tiered seating
classrooms and state-of-the-art audio/visual technology were two factors
in the decision to relocate for the quarterly program.
Located
on the campus of the University of Houston, the Hilton is only a
short drive from Hobby Airport and minutes from downtown Houston.
Any questions concerning the facility or for reservations, contact
the hotel directly at 713-743-2471, or 800-HOTELUH (800-468-3584).
Please
keep this location change in mind when making travel plans for ITP
participants. For specific questions, contact Pam Minks at 713-831-6303,

Improving
Business Processes in Education
Over the years Model-Netics and the MEM Systems have come to be
known as the “Lifetime Learning Tools for Management.”
They have helped organizations of all types and sizes become more
efficient, effective and successful. In November, 2000 MEM and Houston
Independent School District (HISD) began working together to develop
a program that would help implement decentralization. The focus
of this initiative was to bring business improvement processes to
education. With well-run and efficient management systems, schools
can focus on their true objective - education. The end products
of this effort were the School Business (SBM) program and the School
Administrator Management System (SAMS).
