Northbound Train Spotlight

Organization:   University of Houston
Location:   Houston, Texas
Industry:   University/Higher Education
Interview With:   Dennis Fouty, Ph.D.,, Assoc. Vice President/Vice Chancellor

When were you first introduced to Model-Netics?
Mr. Fouty: I took the class at the University of Nebraska in 1982. It is interesting to note that the MEM methodology and Model-Netics content has well stood the test of time. As an aside and testament to the value of MEM, my instructor, Paul Carlson, is now the comptroller for the State of Nebraska.

How do you personally use Model-Netics?
Mr. Fouty: I use the content and framework of Model-Netics in many aspects of my life including, but extending beyond, my job. Considering the Seven Ports of Life, I use the concepts and models in areas such as raising children, interpersonal relationships, extended family, community leadership and personal finance. I use it as a daily tool when I attend meetings and interact with my colleagues, staff and senior leadership.

Why did you introduce Model-Netics within your organization?
Mr. Fouty:
I was in the process of retooling the management team and organizational processes of my areas of responsibility and decided to revisit Model-Netics. I wanted a tool set that we could deploy quickly and consistently across the organization.

Who receives Model-Netics training in your organization?
Mr. Fouty:
The inaugural class was selected from my management team. I wanted to have a well-rounded representation of IUH departmental demographics. The 10 graduating students were then asked to “sponsor” one person within their organization to take the next class. We found that the new students vigorously interacted with their Mentors through on-the-job applications of MEM principles where it was the most beneficial - every day on the job! Practicing these skills with a respected co-worker laid the real-time foundation for maintaining the attitude developing the habits to KASH in on Model-Netics. Many Mentors reinforced their new found skills by providing guidance, support, and study-help to those they sponsored.

What have been the benefits to participants of having taken the Model-Netics course?
Mr Fouty:
The graduates report they are better prepared to manage their areas of responsibility. They now have specific “tools” at their disposal to address the many “real-time” management challenges they face each day. They now have a structure for their management responsibilities.

Can you share a specific incident that demonstrates how Model-Netics has had a positive impact on your organization?
Mr. Fouty:
Many improvements in our organizations behavior can be attributed to the Model-Netics course. Those include:

  • Improvement of the quality of meetings.
  • Better communication of problems.
  • Better selection of employees.
  • Shift from main concern being Problem Management towards Problem Avoidance.
