Part
I Speaker
Deborah Singleton, District Superintendent with the Houston Independent
School District (HISD) spoke on behalf of the Part I group. Deborah
began by providing a short historical perspective on the introduction
of Model-Netics at the district by then Superintendent and current
U.S. Secretary of Education, Rod Paige. She then went on to describe
how Model-Netics has personally impacted her. "Model-Netics
has changed me personally and enhanced my managerial capabilities.
It has helped to give me clear insight into those who I manage so
that I can enhance their abilities and stretch them to higher productivity
and achievement."
Deborah concluded her remarks by mentioning
that Model-Netics has helped move the District in one direction
through the "bedrock" foundation of Model-Netics. "I
hope that my training helps the District and my employees continue
the progress in using a common language as we all continue on the
Northbound Train."
Part
III Speaker
Barbara Turner (2691), Director of Marketing Programs with American
General Financial Services spoke for the Part III class.
Her comments were focused on her introduction
to Model-Netics at American General in addition to teaching the
course. When Barbara first started at American General and was exposed
to the language of Model-Netics, she admitted, "I wasn't sure
what they were talking about." But upon her completion of the
Model-Netics Basic Course, "I understood what people were saying
around me
I saw ways to better organize what I was doing
in management and using it as a time management tool."
It has been through the process of teaching
Model-Netics that has given new perspective to Barbara regarding
the program - "You don't really know Model-Netics until you
teach it." She concluded her comments by passing along some
useful teaching techniques for classes made up of entry level employees.
"Because these individuals do not have a management background
or desire to go into management, it's important to present models
in a different framework. You have to have a different spin on how
to present the models. For example, use the Delegation Triangle
to make sure you are prioritizing your tasks in the same order that
your manager expects.
Featured
Speaker
Harold S. Hook (0001), Founder and President of Main Event Management
Corporation was the featured speaker at the graduation luncheon.
Mr. Hook referenced his comments to the work of Thomas Huxley -
"The Technical Education" which explained that an education
should produce the following three things: 1) The ability to make
yourself do what you have to do. 2) Do it when it ought to be done,
and 3) ("Do it") Whether you like it -- or not. Hook explained
that the difficulty in meeting this criteria stems from procrastination
and related what Model-Netics can do to help overcome procrastination.
"Model-Netics is an operational catalyst
which provides each individual with a low activity threshold. Learning
Model-Netics gives you a program for action therefore allowing you
to get started without very much difficulty." He commented
that learning Model-Netics should provide you with more control
on the "what to do" thereby allowing you to do it when
it "ought to be done." Regarding the third criteria of
education "doing it whether you like it or not," Hook
noted that Model-Netics can make this process more rational and
understandable. He explained this by using the example of taking
action on termination and transfers, both management assignments
that are often procrastinated upon. Through the use of models such
as the Job Match Diagram and Job Fusion Triangle the focus is kept
on the job match between the person and the job rather than concentrating
solely on the person. The ability to de-personalize the situation
is helpful in bringing about more immediate action.
